Porcelain Veneers

Many people would love to have a more attractive smile....

However, most people are aware that their teeth that are less than ideal and they are extremely self conscious about flashing a big toothy grin. This is because they have one or several of these problems - their teeth are cracked, chipped, broken or misshaped. Others have teeth that are badly stained or discoloured. Or some have huge gaps between their teeth.
Dr Papavarnavas porcelain veneers
If you have any of these problems - Don't despair because you may be an ideal candidate for porcelain veneers.

So what are these veneers all about?

They are thin shells of porcelain which is a glass or ceramic material that are bonded to the front and tops of the teeth. The veneers are very thin and therefore your dentist doesn't have to remove too much of your own tooth's enamel surface. This is what makes this option so appealing in contrast to the amount of the tooth that has to be removed when a crown is fitted. It is also far less invasive a treatment for you the patient.

Dr Papavarnavas great smileOne of the other benefits is that, once fitted, the veneers are very attractive, are natural looking and feeling. The material allows light to shine through it and it then takes on the colour of the underlying tooth.

Should you decide to have veneers fitted, you need to take into consideration that it is a permanent and irreversible procedure and that the veneers will have to be replaced every ten to fifteen years. Therefore, you should rather invest in porcelain over the resin because the porcelain is a lot more stain resistant.

There are some disadvantages to be aware of as well:

  • Due to the fact that some of the tooth's surface is removed, you are pretty much committed to having veneers.

  • If the veneer cracks, breaks or chips it will probably have to be replaced.

  • Sometimes, some people experience sensitivity to hot and cold foods which can be a little uncomfortable. This sensation should disappear over time.

  • You need to treat the veneers with care which means that you shouldn't continue biting your nails or chewing on the end of a pen. This could dislodge the veneer.

However, the benefits far outweigh the negatives and veneers can give you back your confidence and your great smile!

Dr Papavarnavas will be able to give you the best assessment of whether the choice to have veneers applied to your teeth is your best option or not.
